Op-Ed – Too many old steelbook titles?
Yesterday we invited you to share their thoughts on the steelbook market.
Rants, raves, moaning and bragging are all welcome, and reader Garry Rooney dropped us a line with his thoughts:
I believe there’s too many older titles being released on Steelbook. For me, I think a Steelbook should celebrate the release of a new title rather than just releasing an entire back catalogue for the sake of it (Zavvi are quite blatant culprits for this).
I will admit however, there have been some good ones in the past (Akira, Star Wars) but I don’t really fancy paying £20 for The Thin Red Line on Steel when you can pick it up for mega cheap on DVD!
But that might just be me.
So what do you think?
Personally, I don’t have a problem with older titles getting new releases, IF they are given the right treatment. There have been some VERY nice looking releases such as last year’s The Rocketeer, Zatoichi, and upcoming titles like Legend.
What IS a shame is that many of these older titles are simply repackaging existing discs, with nothing in the way of new transfers or extra features. There are notable exceptions of course, especially from the likes of Arrow Video, but normally the box is all that’s different.
So what do you think? Chime in below!
